The intention of this talk is to lay the foundations for further discussions with interested researchers about the nexus of gender relations, environment and development. First, Michelle will give a brief history of gender scholarship and international development initiatives around environmental issues. She will then outline 3 broad approaches in the scholarship: essentialist, political ecological and an approach based on understanding gender as a process. Dwelling on the last of these, participants will be invited to think about how to engage gendered understandings of environmental and developmental processes with resilience thinking.
